AL-SULTAN MUHAMMAD GHIYASUDDIN

Al-Sultan Muhammad Ghiyasuddin, from the Dhiyamigilee Dynasty, popularly known as Haji Bandaarain or Shaheed kulha Bandaarain ascended the throne in 1766 AD. He was a noble, wise and an enlightened monarch who served the country in many different ways. During his comparatively short reign of almost nine years, he compiled the first ever Dhivehi Dictionary and wrote dissertations on many different aspects of Maldivian life. Noteworthy among these were a thesis on traditional medicine, a disposition on the cultural and traditional practices of the country. He was also responsible for the introduction of “Ban’bukeyo”- breadfruit - to the country.

This noble Sultan was dethroned in 1774.
